The2010shaveseenanexplosioninpopularityofChinesetelevisionfeaturingsame-sexintimacies,LGBTQ-identifiedcelebrities,andexplicitlyhomoeroticstorylinesevenasstateregulationson“vulgar”and“immoral”contentgrowmoreprominent.Thisemerging“queerTVChina”culturehasgenerateddiverse,cyber,andtransculturalqueerfancommunities.Yettheseseeminglyprogressivetelevisualproductionsandpracticesarecaughtbetweenmultilayeredsocioculturalandpolitical-economicforcesandinterests.
Taking“queer”asaverb,anadjective,andanoun,thisvolumecounterstheWestern-centricconceptionofhomosexualityastheonlywaytounderstandnonnormativeidentitiesandsame-sexdesireintheChineseandSinophoneworlds.Itproposesananalyticalframeworkof“queer/ingTVChina”toexplorethepowerofvariousTVgenresandnarratives,censorialpractices,andfandomsinqueerdesire-voicingandsubjectformationwithinalargelyheteropatriarchalsociety.Throughexaminingninecasescontestingtheidealsofgender,sexuality,Chineseness,andTVproductionandconsumption,thebookalsorevealsthegenerative,negotiativewaysinwhichqueernessworksproductivelywithinandagainstmainstream,seeminglyheterosexual-oriented,televisualindustriesandfanspaces.
